Program Files 1883-1960; 1944-1960.

This series contains a variety of printed material pertaining to the mission work of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) and its Board of Foreign Missions (BFM), as well as material pertaining to foreign mission work in general. These records are from 1883-1960 with the bulk of the material dating from 1944-1960. Types of records include printed reports, background papers, press releases, promotional and outreach material, minutes, business correspondence, annual reports, essays, articles, circular letters, and mission bulletins and publications. A small amount of correspondence relates to global literacy efforts and mission work in Tanzania and Ethiopia. There are copies of BFM policies as they relate to specific topics, for example, the church's relationship with affiliate churches, and rules and regulations for candidates. Most of the material pertaining to Indonesia was generated and retained as a result of the involvement of ALC missionary the Rev. Gerhard O. Reitz as the LWF Liaison Officer to Indonesia. The ALC had loaned his services to the LWF and he served in Indonesia from 1957-1961. Most material in this series either is promotional in nature or was used by the BFM while pursuing its mission efforts. It comprises the bulk of pre-1930 material. These records include missionary circular letters, essays pertaining to mission work and life in the field, a sample packet of information detailing the church's Foreign Mission Reconstruction and Development Campaign after World War II, and copies of updates from Dr. Theodore Fricke's 1944 Latin America Mission Tour. In particular, there are background papers related to mission work and Communism; a press release regarding the Lutheran church in Brazil; annual reports of the Lutheran missions in Tanzania; and several copies of German-language mission publications from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that were originally in the possession of the Rev. Otto Proehl, an ALC pastor. This material, printed in German, includes publications related to the Gossner, Saxony, Basel, Berlin, Leipzig, and Neuendettelsau missions, as well as the Moravian Brethren Missions. Records are arranged alphabetically by subject.
